How to Lay Tile in Patterns

When remodeling a space, you can add personality by installing tiles in various sizes, shapes, and patterns. However, it can be difficult and time-consuming to lay tile in patterns, as it requires careful preparation and impeccable attention to detail.

If you want to lay tile in patterns, you need to learn how to do it properly. You also need to choose a tile pattern that will transform your home. At St. Louis Tile Company, we help you choose from a variety of popular tile patterns and assist you in preparing to install it, so you can achieve the space of your dreams.

Transform Your Space With One of Our Most Popular Tile Patterns

At St. Louis Tile Company, we stay up-to-date on the latest tile trends and the most popular tile patterns. Whether you want a contemporary or a classic look, our team of design experts will help you choose the perfect tile pattern for your home.

Basketweave Pattern Tile

tile patternsBasketweave pattern tile is a simple, unique pattern that is easy to install. Basketweave pattern tile can be styled in either a traditional or contemporary way and uses a mosaic of tiles with tiny squares that resemble the over-under stitching of a woven basket.

Brick Pattern Tile

Brick pattern tile is a simple, attractive option for backsplashes and walkways. The end of each tile should line up with the center of the tile above and below it to create staggered grout lines. Brick pattern tile is ideal for hiding flaws, such as imperfect walls.

Chessboard Pattern Tile

Despite the geometric pattern, a chessboard pattern tile floor is timeless and classic. Chessboard pattern tile is versatile and ideal for a variety of spaces, including bathrooms and kitchens.

Diagonal Pattern Tile

A layout with diagonal pattern tile uses square-shaped tiles laid at a 45-degree angle, so they look like diamonds. Perfect for small spaces, diagonal pattern tile diverts your attention to the widest part of the tile and makes a small space look wider than it is.

Grid Pattern Tile

tile patternsGrid pattern tile is a common, cost-effective way to lay square or rectangular tiles. To achieve the grid pattern tile look, you must lay the tiles in a simple grid pattern so the edges of the grid line up to the walls.

Herringbone Pattern Tile

tile patternsAs an elegant, intricate option, you can achieve a herringbone pattern tile look by laying interlocking rectangular tiles at a 45-degree angled V shape. Herringbone pattern tile will visually expand a small space, as the V-shaped tiles create movement and the illusion of additional width.

Hexagon Pattern Tile

tile patternsHexagon pattern tile is a popular option for bathrooms. Hexagon tiles have six sides and fit together like a puzzle, so they easily create a cohesive pattern. With hexagon pattern tile, you can create a variety of looks in your space.

Straight-Lay Pattern Tile

tile patternsStraight-lay pattern tile, or offset tile, refers to a specific process of tile installation. In the process, you must set square or rectangular tiles horizontally, so they are square to the wall in parallel rows. Straight-lay pattern tile is the simplest way to install tile and ideal for beginners.

Traditional Subway Pattern Tile

How to Lay Tile in Patterns

Prepare to Install Floor Tile

After choosing your tile and a pattern, you must prepare the floor. Before you begin, make sure the tiles work by laying them in the pattern of your choice. Lay the tiles with the first tile centered in the middle of the floor, and work outward from that.

Gather your tools and supplies. You will need a variety of tools, including:

  • Grout mix
  • Grout sealer
  • Pencil
  • Rubber mallet
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Thin-set mortar
  • Tiles
  • Tile cutter
  • Tile spacers

Mix your thin-set mortar in a bucket according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Cut and Fit Your Tiles

Whether a bathroom floor or a kitchen backsplash, you need to measure the height and width and find the center point of the surface before you begin to cut and fit tiles. As you reach cabinets and walls, you must trim tiles with a tile cutter, so they fit along walls and corners.

Set and Install Tiles

tile patternsBeginning in the middle of the room, you must spread the mortar with the thin side of the trowel. Move the mortar in one direction to ensure uniform application. Remove excess mortar with the trowel and place it in the bucket.

Next, lay the first tile square at the crossing of the reference lines. Lightly twist the tiles to press them into the mortar. Place tile spacers at the edges of your first tile. Continue to lay tiles along the reference lines and add spacers along the way. Once you complete a section, level the tile with a rubber mallet. Use a damp sponge to remove excess mortar.

Apply the Grout

Once the thin-set is dry, remove the tile spacers from between tiles. Read the manufacturer’s instructions and mix the grout accordingly. You should also use the proper water-to-mix ratio to ensure a paste-like consistency. Grout dries quickly, so you must make several small batches.

Allow the grout to dry for 20 minutes, or the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer. After you install the grout, avoid heavy foot traffic for at least 72 hours. Wait approximately three weeks for the grout to cure completely. Then, apply a grout sealer to the joints. Once the grout sealer dries, your patterned floor is ready for use!
