If you’re wondering what’s trending for 2019, we’ve got you covered. You may be surprised to see a few favorites from last year with an updated twist or two. There’s lots of fun in store when it comes to tile and we can’t wait to share our favorites with you.
St. Louis Tile has expert designers who stay on top of the latest tile trends, so if you’re itching for a new look for 2019, read on for ideas or stop in an see us anytime for a design consultation.
Shades of Coffee
Think earthy, coffee colors—everything from creamy light cappuccino to the darkest espresso, as well as all the milk chocolate shades in between for 2019. You’ll also see plenty of taupe tiles with variations in color. If you’re up for something interesting, select two tiles that are nearly identical (but slightly different in hue) and arrange them in a staggered pattern on the floor. It will keep your design interesting but not too busy because of the soothing earth tones.
Fish Scale Tile
We’ve seen fish scale tiles before, but what’s unexpected is the interesting color choices for the upcoming year and the patterns they create for floors and walls. You’ll find everything from ocean shades of blues and greens to mouthwatering chocolate shades and darker shades of charcoal or black. Think instant drama! Hang the scales up or down to create different looks and texture.

Painted Tiles
Prepare yourself (in a good way!) for even more patterned tiles, some of which are actually hand-painted. This is a great way to bring in elements from other cultures and give your space a truly exciting, exotic feel.
If you’re concerned about too much color and pattern, select a small area, such as the entryway landing, or maybe just tile just a niche behind the stove. Small doses won’t make you feel overwhelmed. Then again, if you’re a person who loves uniquely painted tiles all over, we won’t steer you away – we love it, too!
Tile Shapes
Tile shapes were big in 2018, but next year, look for a new take on old favorites. Hexagon, standard size and elongated, will be available, and you’ll also see more triangle, arabesque, fish scale (see above), and elongated subway tiles—an interesting update on a classic. These long and narrow subway tiles can be applied vertically or horizontally to visually lengthen or widen a space. Change it up a little and do both in the same space – it creates an eye-catching pattern.
Tile Colors Beyond Neutral
For 2019, there still are no hard and fast rules when it comes to color. But for people who love color (and you know who you are), prepare for shades of green—from pastels to deep sea shades. Also, look for lots of bright, carefree, happy colors. Rest assured, there will never be a shortage of neutrals and rich coffee colors in 2019.
St. Louis Tile Predictions
When it comes to tile, we have a sneaking suspicion there will be people aplenty who don’t care what’s trending and will simply go with what they love, which we encourage – there’s not really a right or wrong – if it’s in the store, it’s probably on-trend.
